Lantus

I used Lantus for about a year before switching to a pump. For me, Lantus was a great improvement
over Ultralente. It was much more predictable, and it significantly smoothed out my blood sugar
levels. It's also more convenient, since it only has to be injected once a day.

Just remember that you can't mix Lantus with other insulins. I've also heard that's it's more
fragile than other insulins, so vials tends to lose potency faster. I didn't have any problem
getting a month out of a vial, but I kept them refrigerated most of the time.

Tony, I've been on Lantus for a few years. I like it. I do not experience much of a peak, and it
seems to last around 24 hours for me. I've read others' experiences with it, and Lantus' duration
seems to vary quite a bit from person to person.

I know Rick Ayres has already said this, but NEVER mix Lantus with another insulin. My doc has also
told me not to reuse a Lantus syringe with any other type of insulin. Also, as Rck mentioned, Lantus
appears to me to be a bit more fragile than other insulins. So, be careful about it getting too hot.
(i.e., don't leave it in the car when it's warm)

I hope the Lantus works well for you. I look forward to hearing how the pump works for you, if and
when you get there.

As far as mixing insulins, do not mix any insulins with Lantus. Also, do not reuse your Lantus
syringe for any other types of insulins. (N, NPH, R, Humolog, Novolog, etc. This includes the fast
and slow insulins.) So, inject your Lantus and either throw the syringe away, or mark it as your
Lantus syringe until your next Lantus shot. Then, with a different syringe, take your other
insulin(s). (Of course, you can take your other insulins before the Lantus. The point is to not have
Lantus and another insulin in the same syringe.)

I've never had a problem mixing N with R, N with Humolog, nor N with Novolog. I've read some posts
suggesting that some people prefer to keep all of their insulins separate, but I mix N with Humolog.
(I no longer take R or Novolog.)
