I don't think Basso will win, and I don't think it's enough to hold Ullrich
off either. Rasmussen is going to need to pick up some more seconds if he
wants to be on the podium. We'll see how much time he can gain in the last
3.1 km of stage 18.

M.Rasmussen will have to gain time on Ulrich before the iTT. Even

started. He has already won stage 9, he did the final climb on stage
15 faster than anyone else - i think will take stage 18 as well. He
will be even more motivated because he needs to take time from
J.Ulrich.

To me it seems like M.Rasmussen has statistic in his favour - he's
2:39 up.

Besides the finnish on stage 18 (cat3 followed by decent until final
cat2) is way more nasty than most people think. The stage will be
ridden like a Classic due to the importance of the possible gains.
In fact it's perhaps the only stage where Rabobank team will have an
egde an be able to support M.Rasmussen very well. Compared to T-Mobile
they have prepaired for it.

the other day I was going to post that Rasmussen probably never did a
time trial at his limit, ever, so how do we know how fast he can go?
Then Rasmussen cleared it up for us (cyclingnews):

Even if he doesn't increase his buffer, Rasmussen is relatively
confident that he can pull out a good ride. "I've never had the
pressure on me for a time-trial, so I never pushed myself to ride well
in them," he told Dutch TV. "Now it's different and I know I will be
able to perform well on Saturday. Tomorrow, I worry about tomorrow and
the day after about that day. I have almost three minutes to the fourth
place; the course on Saturday suits me very well."

Rasmussen's team director Erik Breukink was quoted in an interview with
De Telegraaf as saying, "The parcours of the time trial in St-Etienne
is far from flat. On Saturday, Michael has nearly three minutes on
Ullrich to play with. I don't know if it's enough, but I'm certainly
convinced that he can do a very good time. There are still other
chances."
