  1. Hello Group,

I'm planning a long weekend in the Lakes mid-month and would like some
advice from the group. Have you any suggestions on an exciting Grade 1
scramble (I've too much fear for grade 2's!) I've done Jack's Rake, Striding
Edge and Sharp Edge, all without a problem. A couple of exciting options of
the ilk of those 3 and even a little more challenging would be much
appreciated. A prolonged scramble would be no problem either.

    In hopeful anticipation

Bill O'Connor has a book out called 50 Best Scrambles in the Lake
District, which should give you plenty to get your teeth into. You
seem to have done the best at the grade you're happy with, although
O'Connor rates Sharp Edge as 1/2 so it might not be too much of a leap
to try a few at 2. With this in mind you could try the climbers
traverse on Gable which will get you into some great situations. This
includes 'Threading the Needle' which looks hard, but if you take your
time it's not that bad. It might be a good idea to visit Napes Needle
from the 'other side' first to get used to the reverse you will have
to do to complete the scramble. I believe the path continues at about
the same grade to the top of Gable.
