Usually all my longer backpacking trips are done in the Highlands of Scotland where to get from one area of civilisation to another over high ridges very often naturally takes you several days.
I haven't got any maps here with me but was trying to think of the longest high level walks I could do in the Lake District without crossing any roads and without getting too much of a contrived walking around in circles feeling.
From memory I'd guess walking from Ennerdale to over Pillar, Great Gable, Scafell Pike, Great End, Langdale Pikes to Grasmere or Ambleside would be about the longest you could do. Or after that, Ambleside to Keswick over the Helvellyn ridge. Is that much more than a long day walk?
