First, because he called me on the carpet for quoting MSDS's, he's a
chemist of some flavor. Second, he said "science degrees" ... that
smacks of grad student.

Personally, my graduate work was in spatial distribution theory, and
while I passed Pchem a couple of decades ago, my reliance on MSDS's
comes from marine welding classes and salvage operations (which I was
involved in after grad school).

Sadly, I was waiting for the "science minded" to nail me of my
favorite working temp.

I WAS wondering how one works with (and maintains) metal whilst at -40C.
That would be impressive. I didn't say anything, because - as I said - I
don't know a thing about welding (unless you can translate an above-average
knowledge of how-to with a soldering iron 🙂 ).

avoids top-posting. Proper quoting, judicious trimming and proper

Funny thing ... cold is, by far, less of a problem than
contamination/water. You can get a perfectly good critical weld with
-40 degree air temps, but put the welder (person and wet weld
equipment) in 3C seawater and you will (possibly) have welds with
hydrogen micro-presence and porosity problems. So if the project isn't
too big to bring on deck, but is too big to get below deck ... one
might find themself welding topside in -40.

Met a dude a few years back that was an underwater welder. Worked on oil
rigs... big, big bucks.
