Third: She needs to talk to her doc and get a referal to someone at
USF (med school) that can do her surgery. This is not unusual and the
med school is a practicing hospital that handles situations like these.

I can also refer her to a loving church in the area that while they
don't have 20k laying around, can help her in other ways.

Nothing is obviously missing. Breast cancer can progress as far as stage 4
metastasized without obvious symptoms. Assuming that something is being left out is

I don't know what resources she's looked into but here are a couple I know of:
Hill-Burton Program

Under the Hill-Burton Program, a number of hospitals and other medical facilities
receive funds from the federal government so they can offer free or low-cost services
to those who are unable to pay. Each facility chooses which services it will provide
at no or lowered cost. Medicare and Medicaid services aren't eligible for Hill-Burton
coverage. However, Hill-Burton may cover services not covered by other government
programs. Eligibility for Hill-Burton is based on family size and income. You may
apply for Hill-Burton assistance at any time, either before or after you receive
care. Call the Hill-Burton Program for more information on this program.

Lumps that are breast cancer are hardly ever painful.

According to the Mayo clinic and breastcancer.org it's true that many
malignant tumors are not painful. Most early-stage cancerous lumps in
the breast are not painful - that's one reason it goes undiagnosed for
so long in many women. They think that if the lumps don't hurt it
can't be cancer. There are some instances where there will be pain,
