  1. I am 55 years old and in pretty good health. For the first time in my life I am
encountering (what I believe are) kidney stones. I have not passed one yet, but
I believe I feel one is..."descending". I have soreness in that region.

I don't have the money to go to a doctor, right now. What can I do for the
pain? And is there any sort of lubricant or something I can take to promote the
passage of the stone? I am straining my urine to collect the stone(s) when it
passes. I guess there are several varieties of kidney stone from different
    causes.

Drink lots and lots of fluids. You could take some alcohol because that will
inhibit the anti-diuretic hormone causing you to pee more. Don't go
    overboard on the alcohol though.

Your diagnosis is suspect. Kidney stones don't cause "soreness." They cause
excruciating pain, so bad it makes you vomit. The feeling is like if you
just made the right change in position, it would relieve the pain, so people
with kidney stones fidget and squirm (as opposed to people with appendicitis
who lie very still because movement hurts). If you know any nurses, you
might ask one to bring you a urine dipstick to check for occult blood in
your urine. The presence of blood in combination with pain is a good
indication of a stone, but for a definitive diagnosis, you need a spiral KUB
    CT scan.

Good luck. I hope you haven't got that rock.
