Does anyone pay mind to cable tension for storage for any period of
time? It seems to me that it must be best to keep the cables tight to
keep them straight and tightly wound...
I am wondering if this is correct logic. Does it really matter? Is it
possible to perceive performance differences based on cable storage
technique? Can this affect cable performance life?

No. Cables are elastic. Store them any way you want, as long as they
don't get kinked. And if they're not stainless, be sure to keep them
dry.
