It is on this date that Eugene Christophe is credited with being
the first rider to wear the yellow jersey, on the 11th stage
from Grenoble to Geneva. Conceived as an aid to help fans
identify the race leader, it has symbolozed the Tour de France
ever since.
But nothing in the Tour is ever without controversy. Belgian
Phillipe Thys, a three time winner of the Tour, claimed to have
been awarded a special yellow jersey for the race leader in
both 1913 and 1914.
In any case, yellow was the color of L'Auto, and yellow is the
color of the Tour.
