  1. I am heading to the Bayhead area for two weeks in August. I will be in Mantoloking and have the map
out with this counter clockwise loop in mind: 528W to 549S to 37E to 35N returning to Mantoloking.
Any opinions on this or any other routes around Mantoloking would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  2. I lived in that area for 15 years and I can sum it up in one word: TRAFFIC. There is some
nice riding in Ocean County, but all the above roads are very heavily trafficked especially
    in the summer.

I have several suggestions for books you can refer to:

Ride Guide Central Jersey, Dan Goldfischer, White Meadow Press

Short Bike Rides in New Jersey, Robert Santelli, Globe Pequot Press

30 Bicycle Tours in New Jersey, Arline Zatz, Backcountry Publications

Coasting Along, Kurt B. Detwiler, EPM Publications

East Coast Bicycle Club of Ocean County (baumann.orgecbc)

    Uncle Barn's (bikehighway.combikehighway.com)

Also, the Edgar Felix Bicycle Path in Manasquan.

Route 35 (Bayhead and south) is a road I avoid (and is the only road you mention that I know).
That part of Route 35 is theoretically a nice road with a wide shoulder, however the shoulder is
usually filled with glass, sand, and parked cars. I personally prefer Monmouth County roads to
    Ocean County roads.

Two places of interest you may want to stop at are "Allaire State Park" and the "Allenwood General
Store". The Allenwood General Store is a well known bike deli/pit stop.

You probably want to get a "Hagstrom" map of the county you want to ride in (available in most local
supermarkets, convenience stores and office supply stores). I also find that "Microsoft Streets and
Trips" (I have the 2002 edition) is quite accurate on road location and measures distances well.
There are some free cue sheets available for the area on www.bikehighway.com (run by a friend of
mine), and also if you do a "Google" search on "Allenwood General Store".

If you have any bicycle difficulties or need anything bike related (perhaps even route suggesions),
friends of mine have been very satisfied with: Brielle Cyclery 205 Union Ave. (Rte 71) Brielle, NJ
    08730 732-528-9121

When I ride in the area, I usually start in Point Pleasant Beach (PPB) and ride inland. My preferred
route out of PPB is: Route 88 West R Osborn Ave. (immediately after Bridge) L River Rd. x Rte 70
(becomes Riviera Rd.) L Main Ave. R Herbertsville Rd. [549]

After that most secondary routes are acceptable.

My preferred route back to PPB is: Atlantic Ave. [524] BR Ramshorn L Old Bridge Rd. @SS R Riverview
Dr. (while crossing Rte. 70) R 35 South (over bridge)

I believe the Allenwood General Store is just before the turn on to Ramshorn.

    Good luck.

www.biketripsnewjersey.org has numerous cue sheets available free. Many rides go near the shore and
if you download a few and consult a map you will find some nice trips. I just used one that went
from Pt. Pleasannt down to seaside and found that even rt. 35 was ok mid morning weekday.
