Hi, I've just subscribed to this group and would be grateful for any advice re the following
I've had a Craghopper "breathable" jacket Aqua Dry 5 - 70 (I think thats some sort of waterproof rating) since 1997 and have tried to re-proof it a couple of times with the Grangers spray that they sell you in Millets etc but in anything more than a shower I get soaked. I have just tried the Grangers liquid that you wash in and then "activate" by tumble drying or ironing. Following the recommendation that the more heat you apply the better I spent a couple of hours very carefully ironing the fabric. This appears to have done a little better than the spray-on stuff but the jacket is far less water proof than when I first bought it. I have not washed the jacket in detergent of any kind.
Boots - when I got the jacket I also bought a pair of Burghaus leather boots with Vibram soles, the labels etc said that the soles could be replaced however, after only moderate use over the last few years the soles are coming away at the toe area - anything I can do to ensure I don't end up with flapping feet?

Reproof sprays are to replace a "Durable Water Repellency" coating on the jacket, not to formally waterproof it. Breathable coatings and laminates will only work well at venting sweat if the surface of the coat is not saturated, and the DWR is to prevent such saturation, but it is the coating or laminate /under/ the face fabric that actually waterproofs it. If this has died (and it seems like it has) then that's that: relegate to gardening or bin it. 7 years isn't a bad life for one of these sorts of things.

Get them to a good boot repairer and have them reattached.

How have you normally washed the jacket? Are you aware that normal washing powders use detergent which severely affects the waterproofing of jackets?

Ordinary detergents sometimes leave behind a residue that waterproofers don't like.I use Nikwax Tech Wash to wash garments,especially prior to reproofing.Washed in this,I think Grangers do one as well,the waterproofing is preserved between proofings.The only problem is it is not cheap,around £4 for 300mls although I did see some for sale last week at £9.99 for a litre which is slightly cheaper.
