Its called the rear derailleur (or rear mech)... the gears
you refer to are the jockey wheels.

More likely the rear mech hangar is bent. Bent mine was last
week and it had similar effects - skipping gears and when I
checked the mech was not hanging straight. Take the rear
mech off and have a look. If the hangar is bent then
hopefully you have a bolted on mech hangar that you can take
off and either replace or bend back into shape.

No. It's highly unlikely that you've actually just bent the
mech cage, more likely is that you've bent the derailleur
hanger. Your LBS should be able to clarify, and bend it back
in to place if necessary.

If your housings are all gunked up, that can affect shifting
too. Although I had new cables put in this spring, the
housings weren't replaced, and it wasnt until I went back
and had both cables AND housing replaced that I finally got
good shifting results
