I rode this 23 mile time trial course over the weekend. Did it 3 times. Twice on Saturday (pretty hard) once on Sunday as a recovery ride under 130hr.
Anyhoo, I think I finally have been riding enough and more seat of the pants than what the computers tell me (although I watch them as well).
Point of this thread. On my second ride, I was trying to stay where I know I can survive without utter exhaustion. Lately, that seems to be 155hr, with an occaisional punch into 156. I had been riding at 155 for about 15 minutes straight, got to this hill, I decided to stand up for the climb, made about 2 pedal rotations and it felt like somebody had jabbed nails through my legs. I promptly sat back down, let my pulse wander to 150 for a few seconds and slowly brought it back to 155.
I used to think this feeling was just simply a lack of fitness (push hard, legs hurt, yada...yada...yada...), now that I'm riding all the time, I've decided to note it, describe it and understand that it's not a general fitness issue. It's gotta be my threshold. SO I'm looking for thoughts on the subject.
I suspect that had I "SLOWLY" walked it up to 160hr it wouldn't have been a problem. I just stood up and tried to peg it up the hill...
I did the 23 miles in 1:05:15 (second run of the day on it), and I was quite happy with that. Showed my average HR at 150 right on the money with 156 max. So I think I have room to improve that time, and 6 weeks to get ready for this event. I tried SERIOUSLY hard to hold and maintain a pulse to watch for fitness and lactic threshold. Now I'm just looking for some thoughts on it.
I did a warmup/first run, and it was 1:09:00 Which was an average 143hr with a max of 152hr.
Sundays recovery ride
1:21:15 126HR avg Seriously windy, but an out and back course. The going out SUCKED... Coming back I held 30+ mph for over 10 minutes on one section, I felt like a GOD!!! LOL... 😄 Mind you, that was done at 130HR or less. How's that for windy? Cadence 100+ in 53-12... WHOOHOO.
