Why two more exercises and not, e.g., a few more sets of what you're
already doing? Not saying two more exercises is a bad idea, just
wondering what you're trying to achieve.
Well, in all honesty I know what to do to for strength training,
hypertrophy, toning up, etc but I like to go to the Gym and just have
fun so my workouts are more geared towards having some fun in the
weight room and not getting too hung up on rules and strictness.
I know if I go in there and do a textbook workout for strength or
hypertrophy I'm going to get bored and I'm going to find excuses to
stay away from the gym so I much rather go in there and do a routine
that is probably overtraing but is still fun and keeps me motivated.
I was under the impression that doing 5 sets of 8 reps was already too
much of a specific exercise (for Hypertrophy or strength) and more Sets
would definitely be overtraining yet you suggest instead of doing a
different exercise I should do even more sets?
For example, I train shoulders on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I know that's
probably not enough rest between those 2 training sessions but I got
over 100 hours rest between Thursday's and next Tuesdays and I've got
used to this so (my schedulle doesn't allow me to do better than this)
I'm sticking with it.
My shoulder workout involves military press and side laterals
(sometimes front raises but they are boring) but you said I should do
even more sets of MP instead of more exercises, well my military press
routine is like this.
I do 5 sets of 8 reps with 180 lbs (resting 60 seconds between Sets)
and I don't change the weight throughout the sets, right now with 180
lbs I can't do a 9th rep on the 5th set.
After these 5 sets I increase the weight to 190 lbs and rest 3 then 4
then 5 minutes between sets and just crank up as many reps as possible.
1 Set of 8 Reps with 180 lbs.
1 minute rest
1 Set of 8 Reps with 180 lbs.
1 minute rest
1 Set of 8 Reps with 180 lbs.
1 minute rest
1 Set of 8 Reps with 180 lbs.
1 minute rest
1 Set of 8 Reps with 180 lbs.
3 minutes rest
1 Set of a many Reps as possible with 190 lbs.
4 minutes rest
1 Set of a many Reps as possible with 190 lbs.
5 minutes rest
1 Set of a many Reps as possible with 190 lbs.
(After this I do 5 Sets of 8 Reps of Side Laterals resting 1 minute
between them)
I know this is a very unorthodox shoulder routine but like I said, it's
fun, my strength is up and so is my size despite doing a routine which
I consider overtraining.
I'm 5.10 1/2 and about 190 lbs but I always had wide shoulders and I
look somewhat funny in a suit because of it, I'm not interested in
getting bigger so I just train for feel and fun and I like military
pressing and it's great getting to the end of a workout and feeling
drained and exhausted and this works for me and hasn't caused me any
injuries, muscle atrophy, strenght loss or anything bad, I'm sure with
a more texbook workout I could possibly get better results in strenght
and size but it probably wouldn't be as much fun.
My chest routine (Mondays and Fridays) is even scarier, I do 15 sets of
benching (60 seconds rest between them); 5 flat, 5 inclined and 5 close
griped and follow that up with 5 of heavy pec-deck before doing 5 of
pullovers all in less than 90 minutes during which I drink over 2
litres of water.
P.S. I'll never understand why people do cardio, I train for 90 minutes
each time I go to the gym and rarely resting more than 60 seconds
between sets, my heart rate is always up and I sweat a lot more doing
that than running on a treadmill staring at a TV set. Cardio is boring,
at least inside a gym it is.
