is this a weird tire size??

Most likely it's a 700 by something-or-other. The Trek 520 models hasn't had
27 inch wheels in many years... any 700c tire of 28c or larger should work
just fine.

I'll bet you the farm it's a 700c tire.

Sometimes 700c are referred to as 28 inch in Europe, and more confusingly,
old roadsters like the rod brake Raleighs and most of the bikes of China,
India, etc, use a tire that's also referred to as a 28", but isn't a 700c.
My old japanese three speed has 26 inch tires, but they aren't the same as
MTB 26 inch or old Schwinn 26". Makes one want to scream. LOL
