now that the road race season is over i was thinking about entering cyclocross competitions. i don't want to buy a new bike but will probably be using new wheels/tires with my existing road bike. i have heard it is hard on the equipment and was wondering if it is a good or bad idea to enter these competitions with my roadie.

Its a bad idea. 'cross frames are a bit beefier. They have disc or cantilever brakes giving better mud clearance than road brakes as well as better stopping power. There is more clearance under the BB as well. You are best off buying a 'cross bike or staying on the road and not screw up your bike. Good luck!

I agree, go and buy a piece of cr*p second hand bike and then who cares how trashed it gets.

Try ebay or even better craigslist.
