    So the budget was in and wifey let me purchase a mtb for transportation and to use at my job.

    Unfortunately, I needed both a gun and a bike. So of course majority of the cash is going into the gun.

    Anyways, We bought a Iron Horse Carbon model from Sport Chalet for $250.00. Apparently it retailed for $500.

    Sure its no cannondale, fisher, ellsworth or even the $1K+ Iron Horse models. Seems to work fairly well, and Im happy with it. Fun lil bike, easy to jump up onto curbs..the real test will be dodging cars at work. LOL

    However what are your opinions on this model and brand? Will it be worth upgrading components in the long run?

    I really like the size and style. Im considering swapping out the front shox to basic Fox or Rock Shox Judy, replacing the caliper brakes with something of a higher quality, the crankset, chain and cassette..because well the chain lodged itself between the frame and gear and tore a nasty gash into the soft metal, and some part swap outs for better quality stuff.

    If I do all that, Im looking at spending just as much as I would buying a new bike.

    Is it worth it, or should I just enjoy what I currently have and upgrade to a new bike in a year?

    What is your opinion on the economy model iron horse bikes?

    spoken like a true cyclist I must say.... upgrading is part of the fun for many. IMO I say upgrade, but stay away from rockshox unless you are little, fox and marzocchi are your best bets. replace things as they die, or as you can truely afford to. best upgrades to do: wheels, tires, suspension, seat, pedals. I'd actually leave the shifters and most of the drivetrain alone since it most likely works as is. the only IH I have ever owned was one of their full sussy bikes, and obviously not designed to carry someone as big as it was designed for, you wont have that problem with a hardtail. ride it, love it, upgrade it.

    Im like a tank on skinny wheels. LOL

    The poor bike, already in its second day and Im beating it up. Im not used to all the noise the rear suspension makes when descending stairs, sounds like its gonna fall apart. Ahhh, seems to be going well so far and ascending curbs is a piece of cake compared to a hard tail.

    Before the IH, I was using work provided Giant hard tail bikes.Now I like having a soft tail.. makes the ride nicer.

    Wensday will be the true test, uphill to work, then 8 hours on the bike.

    Dude I sooooo have tah swap out the seat though, my ass was not liking the standard saddle..even after an hour my sit bones were screaming stop already! lol.

    The Iron Horses are like the low-mid range bikes. Good frames and components, they usually come assembled like [censored] from the factory, and they usually dont get tuned correctly when whoever sells it puts the rest together and tunes it up. Seems like every one of those things I took out of the box had rims that were in desperate need of truing.

    It sounds like your rear derailluer's limit screws need adjusting, or else the chain wouldnt have messed up the frame. Go for the uprades, it is worth it. Enjoy the bike, and shoot stuff. Just not people.
