So, a couple of weeks ago, I sent a query regarding IRD chains. I
received no reply (messages DO get lost), so I bought one...
Yesterday, after about 200 miles, I read hear that IRD chains eat Campy
cog sets alive! (Reported two were totally trashed in about 3000 miles
or so.) I got nervous, pulled the IRD, and put on a Sach 59 (waiting
for my Wippermann to arrive). It works, but I notice it isn't as
flexible as the IRD, and I have some rub problems.
Here's the thing about the IRD - I put it in a jar of solvent and gave
it a good shake. I saw all these little flecks glittering in the jar.
I poured the solvent out into my pan (a steel cake pan with hard drive
magnets underneath) and gave it a swirl. When I drained off the
solvent, here's all this metal - a shocking amount! - collected in the
pan around the magnets. Again, this chain had just 200 miles on a brand
new Record cog set.
I don't know if all this steel came from the cogs or the chain.
However, if the chain wears, so will the cogs. What a pile of [censored]!
