I've been reading your group for the last few days and have enjoyed the spirit. I have just started
a walking program and would appreciate the support. I walk at least a half mile every other day and
have not deviated from this pattern in two weeks. I live in the South so cold weather is not a
problem although the summers can be punishing. I look forward to receiving support from the group
and giving in return.

David

David,

Where in the South are you? I am in Atlanta. Here in Atlanta there are many groups that sponsor
walks. Walks for charity, walks for fun, walks for fitness, take your pick. If you would like some
of the info let me know.

In the meantime, welcome to walking and the newsgroup. Erin-Joi Metro Atlanta

If I told you that I was walking 35 miles in 2 days to help women with undetected breast cancer find
out early enough to survive, would you support me? http://erinjoi.pledgepage.com Feel free to
forward my pledgepage to anyone interested in the walk or the cause.

Welcome David.

I'm not a regular poster but I do read the group daily. Walking has always been a part of my
exercise routine but takes a back seat to biking in the warmer weather.

Increase your distance. You can do it. You need to deviate from your pattern with gradual but
consistent increases in time/and or distance. Unless you have some disability, you should be able
to do a mile and/or 30 minutes of walking without pushing it too far at this stage. You can rev up
your walking speed gradually as well. You need to make small, but consistent efforts to do more
each week.

Thank you all for the replies and encouragement. In answer to the fist reply, I live in Lafayette,
LA. i have not joined any walking groups because I have a varied schedule and have to adjust my
walking time every day. I intend to move my distance up to a mile by the end of next week since I
have no problems with the half mile. I also find that if I can find a nice place to end up at during
my walk or can end up at a store where I need something, it makes the walk more meaningful. How long
have each of you been using walking as an exercise ? On Sat, 13 Sep 2003 13:28:17 GMT, Rita

I live in New York City and don't own a car. So I walk, walk, walk. Half a mile is nothing -- I do
it many times a day. That said, I also do some sustained cardio walking on the treadmill and do
other aerobic work 3 or 4 times a week.

And I often go for long walks in some interesting part of the city, and always try to end up in a
good place where I can treat myself to a little snack or coffree or something. Rewarding yourself
for exercise effort is a good idea.

I have been walking for a few years. I live in a rural area and have a six mile route that I do on
my off days. I use a music tape that keeps me at 5-6 mph pace. The music really helps keep me
energized! Terry

I sometimes carry a Walkman but I also like to listen to the sounds of nature as I walk through the
neighborhood. I've never been successful with any indoor walking because I like the sound of the
outdoors much more.

Hey, David. You're doing great. When I first started walking (January of this year), I could only
go for 10 minutes and that was it. I was exhausted. Now I've lost 70 lbs. through diet and
exercise (walking). I can now walk 4 miles comfortably. I just slowly increased my walking from
month to month.

For me, it doesn't matter how far I walk, only that I do it. I was up to 5 miles a day, but had to
back up to 4 miles because it too hard on the hips.

I like this group a lot. Glad you're here.

I'm sure Rita is right. You can walk a little more when you're ready to go to the next level.

On the other hand, you have to decide what is best for you. Every "body" is different. Take your
time and do it at your own pace. You are the only one you have to please.

It sounds like you have an excellent program. You do have to be creative because as enjoyable as
walking is, it can get somewhat boring at times.

I'm lucky. I haven't been bored yet. :) Maybe I have a simple mind....

I was looking into a gym membership and told one of the salespeople there that I'd been walking 4
miles a day. She gushed, "Oh, now you won't have to do that. You can use our treadmills."

Ugh! Why in the world would I want to do that and give up enjoying the outdoors? Some people!

Treadmills are boring, but less so when I listen to music on my mp3 player. They enable me to get
cardio exercise when it is too hot or too cold to walk outdoors. Without them I wouldn't walk much
in some seasons. The heat for me is much worse than the cold. I do not do well walking on hot and
humid days.

I'm enjoying the group very much. You're right about just doing it. I know that if I exhaust myself,
I won't feel like walking again but if I do a reasonable walk I'll want to do it again.

I agree, they have some good uses when the weather is bad. But I wouldn't want to give up my outdoor
walks when the weather is nice. :)
