I am 19 and am just now getting started with cycling. I am in good shape and have been putting in quite a few miles of training. I would eventually like to compete in some way or another. My university does not have a club team, however is it possible for me to compete in collegiate events in my area as an unattached rider? Also, what is the major organization for amateur cycing in the US? I dont intend to be super competitive but my competitive nature is kicking up and I would really like to compete come spring. If anyone can reference me to a website where I can find out this kind of information, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, can someone explain the "cat" rankings to me. What constitutes cat 5 as compared to cat1? I'm a little confused as to all the vocabulary of the road racing crowd.
