Looking at the installation intructions on my new Ultegra STI shifters, they refer to an outer guide housing which fits inside the shifter and then overlaps with the housing at the handlebar.
I'd always thought that I should run the housing itself into the shifter. Most cable/housing sets I've seen don't include anything like this. Is this 'outer guide' necessary?

If this is the one that kinda looks like a spine, you don't need it and can do without it. I don't see it doing much more than smoothing the feel on your bars. ----------------- Alex __O _-\<,_ (_)/ (_)
