I live in the northeast. The winter months will be here about 3-4 months. I am looking for some advice on indoor trainers. I am new to cycling. I bought my first bike in June and hopefully next year I will enter some races. Maybe even one or two races at the end of this season. I dont know if I should spend the extra money and get a trainer such as the TACX I-MAGIC for example or something similar. Or just go with a decent well priced one for less money. Any advice would be great.
Go to your LBS and take your bike with you. Tell them that you are looking for a trainer and ask them to show you some. Try a stationary resistance trainer and try rollers. Ask them for thier opinion as they are going to be your best resource.
I get bored on a stationary trainer. If I watch TV or read a book, my performance suffers. If I listen to music, I find my cadence matching the beat. Almost gave myself a coronary while listening to Lamb of God!
I don't get bored on rollers as it takes more concentation to stay on them. There is a great deal of incentive to staying on the rollers. Just ask someone who rolled off of them about it. Rollers also give you a workout more closely related to actual cycling as you have to balance yourself. You'll never dump yourself on a trainer but you can on rollers. You can also get rollers with variable resistance units so you can practice climbing.
The best thing to do is get some warm clothing and ride any day there is no snow on the ground.
