I'm fixing up an old road bike. So far I have rebuilt the wheels with aluminum rims and replaced the rear 5-speed hub with a new/used freewheel hub. The frame needs to be spaced for the new axle, although perhaps I could get away with new spacers on the axle and a 6-speed freewheel (which I have one of on hand), I've been told that 6 speed freewheels often fit 5 speed road bikes without spacing?
What I'm really wondering is if there is an indexed stem mounted shifter that would replace the right friction shifter I have now. I would be using it with a shimano tourney derailer and a 6 or 7 speed freewheel. I can live with friction shift for the front der, but I much prefer indexing in the back. This seems to me like the sort of thing that should be available at a reasonable price, but I haven't found anything yet in my searches. Any pointers?
