Hello... I just started road cycling not long ago (10 days) and was wondering what is the best way to improve fitness. My ride consists of a small mountain and then completely flat terrain. Since the mountain is at the beginning and at the end of the ride, I get tired throughout the ride and can hardly maintain an 11mph average. I also have to conserve energy for going up the mountain on the way back. It is a really small mountain back it takes a toll on me.
My question is, should I drive past the mountain and only ride on flat terrain for longer periods of time until I improve fitness? Or should I continue going up and down the mountain to increase leg strength even though I will only be able to ride a much shorter distance?

HI g, you'll find a lot of complex answers here, but letthe truth be known; when starting out from a low level of fitness (I don't want to assume this of you but am going off of your thread...) almost all exercise will be beneficial to your fitness. So if you go out on your bike and get tired (as long as you recover from it!), you will get stronger. So go out there and knock yourself out! Have fun, too.
