I'm skinny

I like swimming, but I'm really skinny. I'm 5'8" and weigh 110 lb. That might be some good
measurements for a girl, But I'm a guy at 28. I almost avoid going to swimming pools all the time.
It doesn't take too much from other guys and girls to get discouraged. I want to know what you
think of that.

That's the problem. You want to know what we think of it. That's why it doesn't take much to
discourage you. A cognitive behavioral
psychologist caqn probably help you eliminate this problem.

Nick,

Chances are no-one is looking at you. And there are certainly people thinner and fatter than you.
they are only bodies.

That is second to what you do with it.

When you're on a masters swim team people are extremely nice (at least on my team). They're not
going to measure you up and down and judge you, like a social pool party, gym pool or a
hang-out-get-some-sun pool crowd would. On our team people are to help and encourage each other.
It's a different and much friendlier environment than a gym or some other meat market. Joining a
masters swim team, you need no qualifying, just find out your closest one, pay your fee, and you're
in. Our team has people of all shapes and sizes. We have a girl that weighed 350 lb when she
started, and lost 100lb so far... And we have plenty of people in your shape too. Everyone is very
nice and encouraging of each other.

I don't think the coach would have it any other way.

Don't let the opinions of others stop you from doing what you want to do--swim!

It's real easy to feel down about one's body if it doesn't look like the models in the media. I'm
somewhat heavier than you, but still thin (5' 7", 132 lbs, 56 years old.), and I'd rather be this
way any day than to struggle with weight year after year. I'm no male model, but I've had large
friends say to me, "I'd give anything to look like you." Another thing: time tends to change the
situation--things may be different at 40 or 50.

I'm 25 and only a very little heavier than you. I go swimming at least twice a week and only once
has my skinny body drawn any comment. There was this muscle meathead who called out - Look at the
skeleton! Then followed by wisecracks about how he could snap my arms with his bare hands. He
probably could of course, his upper arms were wider than my thighs, but that's beside the point :)

The way I see it, the vast majority of the time swimming is spent in the water anyway where ones
body is effectively screened from view. If you are self conscious about your body then just get in
the water as quickly as possible!

Makes you wonder what kind of sad insecurity was driving that meathead bully. Picking on those
he percieves weaker. Bah. Gag me, how lame! I'd probably get on my tiptoes and say that right
into his face.

plus i've seen some big, muscle-bound meatheads acting all tough and "cool", then they get in the
pool and absolutely suck at swimming. i guess they spent all their time pumping iron and never
learned to swim
:)

Just a power thing I guess, because he *could*. Admittedly, I do cut a rather pathetic figure when
stripped down to just trunks, pale skin stretched taut over bony shoulders and chest. But that's no
reason to resort to childish name calling is it?

And I was a better swimmer than he was, too :)

Swimming requires speed, which requires flexibility. Ya don't get flexibility by pushing iron and
getting muscle-bound. Yea, he thinks he could break the thin guy, the only thing is, he couldn't
catch him, and I bet he knows it.

I usually goes deeper than that. I'm thinking, covering up for low self esteem. Picking on those
that seem weaker, to make himself feel better . That is sooo .... maladaptive (psychologically) ...
dysfunctional.

The meathed guy ... just think of him as dusfunctional... mentally. You're right, there's no reason,
other thant the meathead covering up for his lack of self esteem, and doing it at the expense of
others. How old is he anyway? 13?

Probably in his late teens I guess. Anyhow, I've decided to bulk myself up a bit. Not because of
this moron of course but because I'm not sure it's healthy to be *this* thin. My girlfriend had been
nagging at me for months to put on weight, she calls me her 'bag of bones boyfriend' :) I'd just
like some muscle, (well some flesh would do!) on my upper arms and my thighs. Though of course I
wouldn't want to put on so much it would hurt my swimming.

from my experience, swimming adds some upper body strength (muscle). i used to have pretty
unimpressive pecs and shoulders and arms, but the long distance training i've done over the past
year and a half have really done the trick. do a good recovery with a good meal and you can reap the
benefits even more.

Make sure you eat plenty of protein. You just may have a fast metabolism. Also, as you get closer
to 30 you'll bulk up anyway. Just keep exercising and eating right so you don't bulk up in a lot of
fat. Weight bearing exercise will add more muscle mass, as opposed to aerobic, so be sure to do
some weights.
