I had a very strange dream last night:
I was living in Leeds (I used to about 10 years ago), walking along a
street which does not exist but with which I felt very familiar. I
have been there in previous dreams. I was looking for a shop which
served breakfast yet it was almost 1630 hours. I walked past one
possible shop in favour of another which I already knew closed at
1630. When I reached it I confirmed the opening hours on the sign and
turned back towards the 1st shop.
As I returned I passed a kind of motor-spares shop which I had passed
sometime before. On the previous occasion i had seen a small amount of
bike stuff in there but not bothered going in as I assumed it was
likely to contain awful sub£100 bikes and stuff.
This time I went in and found myself in a shop with an amazingly high
ceiling, and no car stuff.
All the bikes were flat handlebar types but one caught my eye - a
tandem. The brand was unheard of - the owner handbuilt them on site,
and this tandem had a price tag on it. The ceiling was so high that
the tandem was hanging from it by its rear wheel, and yet I still had
to reach above my head to grab the front wheel in an attempt to steady
it so that I could read the price tag. £400 it read.
The owner of the shop informed me that the price was £300, and that
when i was ready to buy it I could come back at any time. He pointed
out a rather old and tatty dark-coloured estate car. It had blankets
in the back, and the rear seats where folded down. A dog was inside.
That's where I live, the owner said. Just knock on the window anytime.
We then got talking about the campsite near Roundhay Park, where I
lived for 3 months in real life when I made myself homeless (I hated
my housemates). He asked me if it was still there, and we reminisced
about how kind the warden there was.
And on that note, I went to a clothes rail, picked up my coat which I
didn't remember taking off, and noticed another workshop. This had
tables around the perimeter and was stashed full of newly crafted
panniers.
*****
So - there you have it. If you want a cheap tandem, or some no-name
panniers then you know where to go - it's the fictitious high street
in Leeds between the two breakfast shops, opposite the pub where the
gypsy family were rowing with each other. Know the place I mean?
I need to get out on my bike, me thinks.
