  7. Hi lady,

    Myra said:

Good to see you - you evil woman who got me into that horrible
    geocaching thing.

That's what I spent this past weekend doing with Howard. Wigglekid
went on Saturday, but we were on our own Sunday. Saturday was, um,
interesting. We tried this one that said something about not bringing
young children because of potential dangerous areas on the trail. We
figured they meant the 30 foot drop off on the river side. When we
got to the coords they suggested the cache was on the bluff side of
the trail (picture this: 30 foot drop off down to the river on one
side, 15 foot wide trail, ~200 foot high bluff on the other side).
Okay. There's a semi-flat area about 12 feet up on the bluff side
that might have room for an ammo box up there in amongst the rocks and
gnarly tree roots. I find some sturdy tree roots and saplings and
start pulling myself up. I get up there and brace my feet on saplings
while I look for the box. Howard and Caitlin look at the base of the
bluff and they have no luck. I look up and have no luck. I slip a
couple of times, but other than getting extra dirty and a few
scratches I'm fine - normal caching stuff. Finally, it's apparent
that I'm not gonna find the cache up there so I start planning how to
get back down. My plan was to slide on my butt over the edge while I
kept my grip on this one small tree, hang from it then drop the last
few feet down to the trail. That was the plan. What actually
happened was I slid off, lost my grip, somehow ended up facing the
bluff flat on my back on the trail. Lying with a big rock under my
right shoulder. Thankfully I didn't hit my head hard. The funny
thing is neither Howard nor Caitlin can tell me how I got turned
around. I suspect they both had their eyes closed. <G>

Later on we looked on the river side of the trail and I lost my
footing and ended up catching myself with my left arm. Thankfully I
didn't pull it out of the socket, but it's on convalescence as far as
weight training goes. The deltoid has suspicious swollen areas with
what look like pinpoint bruises on them. Oops. The kicker was when
we went home empty handed and read the entries it became apparent we'd
taken the wrong trail. We went back on Sunday morning, found another
trail that went all the way up to the top of the bluff and found the
cache! Duh! Our fault for trying to be all hard core. <G>

Other than that, I'm still on sabbatical from school while I work on
keeping the crazy at bay (it's a very stubborn type of crazy) and
    Howard and I bought a house. I like having a house. :-)

    Take care,
    Carmen

I want to get a GPS for this reason. My bro-in-law does this with his 6
year old and it sounds like fun.

So, did you ever actually find the cache after falling? 😉

  11. G'day Myra!

    Glad to see you back.

No doubt you'll be glad to know that so far the duct tape is holding
on my kidneys and they haven't fallen out yet, despite LCing for
    almost 7 years now.

No, I didn't go off low carb, although I wasn't as strict as I should
    be for a long time.

I left for a variety of reasons, but primarily because I had been part
of the newsgroup since shortly after its formation, and I was burned
    out.

    Dittos!

Are you still running marathons? The L.A. one is this Sunday. One of
its coordinators is a client of my firm, and I kept thanking her for
keeping it out of the Valley. LOL!

    Myra

There probably won't be another marathon in my near further.
While I'm glad to have run it and learned a great deal on how to
train for an endurance event, it didn't do me a lot of long-term
good. It seemed like I had lost too much LBM while training and
in general it took me longer to get back into my WT track
    afterwards. Plus, while I can run, I don't *~luv~* to run... I
    love to WT.

That said, I do enjoy volunteering to work the NYC marathons.
This year I handed out the runner's info/goodie bags (met a lot
of really happy, healthy people from around the world) and also
worked as a guard at the starting point watching over the elite
female runners. It was fun and profitable. At the beginning of
the NYC marathon the starting area looks like a athletic store
exploded. You have to dress in layers to stay warm while you
wait for the start. Then as they start to line up all of the
runners shed tons of clothes. I Made off with 4-5 black workout
pants, couple of thermal sport shirts, and a pair of really
wornout jeans that fit me better then the ones I've personally
    broken in.

Enough about me. How has your WTing been going? Have you run
    into Nina lately?

It was. I pick the ones that seem to promise a physical aspect to
them - like climbing or a long hike or something. I'm paying for it
though. The rear aspect of the deltoid is tender to the touch and the
arm can't hold much weight. I'm not gonna bug the doctor with it,
because it's just got to heal on its own, but I racked it a good one!

    Take care,

Yup. We went back the next day and found another path that went to
the top of the bluff. The cache *was* at the coordinates I'd been at
the day before, it was just 200 feet up. <G>
I highly recommend geocaching. You can pick caches that are
appropriate to *your* level of physical ability. With kids it's an
excellent way to get them outdoors and exercising too. :-)

    Hey Myra.

I owe you an email; sorry I haven't replied yet, but it's all been a bit
    sucky lately.

I just came across this, and thought "this is Myra":
