On the way home earlier this week, I stopped half-way up the Lid just off of the I-90 trail to strip
off my jacket and put on my blinkie, as it was getting late in the afternoon. Some guy in USPS team
kit and a Trek OCLV passed me just while I was finishing up with this.
I got on the bike and continued up the Lid. I was surprised not to see Lance Jr. -- maybe he turned
off where you have a choice of taking the longer flat route rather than go up and over the top. I
didn't give him much thought again until I came down off of the Lid where the two routes join, and
there he was.
When he was within earshot, I started to sing in my best Highland accent, "I'll tak' the high road
and ye'll tak' the low road, but I'll get to the Park 'n' Ride afore ye", drawing on that past life
in Scotland for just the right balance between nostalgia and enthusiasm.
He gave me this look. What can I say. I decided I'd sing the remainder of the chorus more sotto
voce. (...But me and my true love will never meet again/On the bonnie, bonnie banks O' Loch
Washington...."😉
To my surprise, he didn't take this as a cue to dust me. Instead, he lurked in my slipstream. The
next hill was ahead. I said, cheerily, "this is your chance to pass me -- I'm a really slow hill
climber". Sure enough, as soon as it started to slope upward, he darted out and then attacked the
hill, just like the real Lance, leaving me far, far behind.
'Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen, On the steep, steep side O' I-90, Where in purple hue
the Hieland hills we view, An' the moon makin' a-gloamin' light - ee
