J77 - definitely good to let out your frustrations. There are many, many ppl who feel the same way you do. One of them, is me.
David - "helping people" IS a great thing, without a doubt. I think the point that you're missing, not a fault of your own, is that when someone doesn't have the time and efforts to "help" themself and to be healthy - helping others seems rediculous. Residency is pretty much slavery with a pager, and I find myself jealous of my patients, wanting to be the one laying in bed having someone bring me a tray of food. I am NOT proud of being part of something that preaches health and practices otherwise. A place where sick days are unheard of and looked down upon, where meals are scarce and often unhealthy, and sleep is almost unheard of. I believe I can be more help to others when I am a healthy, well balanced human being. And being a doctor on a doctor's schedule is NOT condusive to that.
Notably, why don't you use your money to help others? you can be of great help by financing research projects or outreach projects, have you investigated all of these options?
