I am between a Specialized Hardrock and a Trek 3500. There is about a $20 difference so I am not sure which to go for... The 2 stores I am looking at are very similar in service and the look of the bike doesn't really matter to me. I also have looked online but I don't feel comfortable buying a used bike that I can't see. Plus I don't have the knowledge to pick out [censored] from a good deal. One more thing I am wondering about is the fit of the bike. I am 5'8" and one store told me 15.5" and the other told me 18-19". That seems like quite a difference. Hopefully I can get some good feedback because I would like to get my bike soon so I can get riding.

There's not going to be much difference, choose the one you like the look of.
As far as sizing, I am 5'8". My MTB is an 18.5". 15" seems a bit small. Sometimes guys who like doing tricks go for the smallest size possible.
If you can get the seat to the correct height without going beyond the "maximum extension" seatpost mark, it shouldn't be a huge issue. BUT, you also need to make sure the difference between handlebars and seat height is ok too. The smaller the frame, the lower the bars. This can be remedied by "flipping" the stem and/or adding a bunch of spacers under the stem. Doesn't look great but works.
PS go to my profile pics and you'll see an orange MTB - that's it. Imagine the 3 more inches of seatpost the 15 would offer...

Test ride the bikes. Buy the one that fits best, rides best, looks best, and fits your budget. Both bikes are going to be good bikes.
