If you're in Edinburgh you'd be absolutely mad not to
consider one of the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op own brands, as
they're widely rated as the best value-for-money cheap
bikes in Britain. Look at their Courier and Cuillin ranges.
Also look at the County tourer from EBC, no suspension, but
a very nice bike for the money, versatile - a good commuter
bike with light off-road (canal towpath type stuff)
capability, and as you might expect, a capable tourer.
You'll appreciate the mudguards later in the year.
I've had my County for four years now. Mine has the older
non-compact frame, but mechanically it is pretty much the
same as the current model. I've been very happy with it. The
only problem I had was a tendency to break rear wheel
spokes, which an inexpensive wheel rebuild at LBC (Spokes of
St Andrews) cured completely.
