i was at a bike shop last week & i seen 2 bikes that had the same wheel type, size as each other, but on one, the hub area where the spokes attach was larger than the other. this would shorten the spokes a little with the same wheel o.d. is there an advantage/disadvantage with this design over the smaller hub?

All other things being equal.... which they are likely not:
1. Hub with larger diameter flange will result in a laterally stiffer wheel.
2. Hub with larger diameter flange will result in a heavier wheel.
