I am feeling rather foolish as it appears I have had a wheel built for my Specialized Sirrus with the wrong axle length for the hub. Having originally taken the old wheel (without bike) to my LBS in Oxford I was informed (after they "measured" it) that the wheel had a 135mm mountain bike hub but a 700C wheel. As this particular LBS did not seem fussed on building me such a wheel, I went elsewhere and assumed this 135mm measurement to be correct and had the wheel built. I did measure the distance myself from the bike beforehand to check it, but has assumed it to be the length of the axle rather than the distance between the inside faces of the dropouts. Now after some more research I have found out, I think, that the latter is true, and that OLN stands for "over lock nuts". Oops!
So basically I have a new wheel with a 135mm hub which does appear to actually fit quite easily with only minimal force between my 130mm dropouts (but it doesn't just drop in like the old wheel). So actually everything is working fine with the wrong size hub and I rode the bike for the first time this morning. However the frame is aluminium. What are my chances of getting away with this without wrecking the frame? As I've had a strange sized wheel built to my specs, I can't really take it back and get a refund, and after a lot of hassle to get this odd sized wheel, it actually turns out that a standard one would have done the job just fine!!

It was all going so well up until this point. Depending on how you ride, you might get away with it on a steel frame (not recommended though), but personally I wouldn't risk it on an aluminium frame. Others may disagree, but that's my opinion!

OK with steel frame - probably OK with ali - BUT you might be able to rescue the hub/wheel with a different set of cones (or taking out the spacer washers if there are any) to lose the excess 5mm - axle will probably have to be replaced if you are using a QR skewer. Probably best to own up at the shop and see if they can fix it!

If the dropouts are chunky there may well be enough room for the longer axle - 2.5mm at each end isn't much. Wouldn't take much work with an angle grinder either :-)
