  1. My mtb. rear hub (Shimano 525) makes a sound like a washer rolling around in a bowl when pedalled in the highest gears (even in the stand). The bearings have been serviced and he axle is tight, but the wheel spins freely like it should. The derailler shifts okay. This sounds like something internal. The cassette has been tightened but has developed more play side to side since then. Is it the freewheel body? What exactly do I need to replace? Do the freewheel become loose and rattle around independantly of how much you tighten the cassette? Thanks.

I just got this bike rolling again after a tire warranty, its just one thing after another.

  2. Where do you live?

A week or so ago I worked on a bike that sounded like it had dry hub bearings. When I took the rear hub apart there was plenty of grease in the bearings but the end cover came loose from the Shimano freehub body. That's pretty unusual. I serviced the hub but, when I put it back together, it still made the same noise. I ordered a new freehub body for it, but another mechanic installed it so I don't have any first person knowledge of the outcome.
