I've finished making the grindplates. Although my cranks are so bent
it's impossible to crank grab, the whole uni tips over to the side. When
I get the beautiful new one I will put the pedals on that and grind
away. I may do the tutorial before then though on how to make them.

Andrew, your advice is right but the explanation is somewhat spotty.
Last year or so, there was a great thread on Stillstanding in which we
explored the physics of it in greater detail.Trying to summarise: if
you rotate your upper body to the right, your lower body (including
the uni) 'wants' to rotate to the left to conserve rotational moment.
However, friction at the tyre contact patch prevents most of the lower
body rotation. Therefore, a force to the right is exerted by the tyre
on the support, which in turn generates a force to the left on the
unicyclist + uni, keeping them upright.

Yeh, I realise it's a bit of a poor explanation but I couldn't make it
any clearer without adding more text and I really didn't want too many
seconds of text since it's a video tutorial. I'll probably add some of
these explanations (like yours) later on as text beside the link to the
video. I don't really have time to change the video for now, but maybe
I will in a few weeks or months.

On a slightly different topic, I don't know if this is the same problem
that other people have been having but I was unable to redirect

steps and it seems like it should be possible. Do I have to use an
account to do it called 'tutorials' or can I do it through
andrew_carter? It seemed like I could do it through my account
(andrew_carter) but I got an error. Hopefully we'll be able to have
tutorials.unicyclist.com as the address because that's nice and easy to
remember.

for an updated version of the site. It's getting there now. Peter
hasn't yet transferred any of the info over from the 'wikibooks' page so

ive just been checking out the site.... looks pretty sweet, keep it
up.

One pointer...i noticed that hoptwists are in the trials section.
I think hoptwists are more of a street thing than a trials thing...

Yeh, I wasn't sure about that. I guess maybe, but these are done on the
spot rather than rolling. I can't see any street applications for on
the sport hop twists. I also considered putting it in the freestyle
section but once again, they're usually done from a rolling start. The
way I've been using these ones is to do gaps while spinning in the air
which I consider trials. What do you think?

I think that's one of the problems with the accounts, I tried to get it
to redirect mine and had the same problem. Gilby?

You could get a .TK address. It's free and it will redirect in the same
way as tutorials.unicyclist.com would. You could have an easy to
remember name like UnicycleTutorials.tk or something similar.

I think Nick is right. Hop twists are more of a street thing. Even
though it is from a still position it forms the basis for a rolling hop
twist (that's the right term for it?). And even then it could sort of go
under the freestyle category, although it's probably used more in street
unicycling videos. But as Dan Heaton says Freestyle + Trials = Street.
So going by this things fit under freestyle and trials and then there's
things that would only fit street for example grinding.

Andrew, the videos are great and very instructional. Would it be
possible for you to redo the text as a voice over? Benefits:
1. More 'flow' in the video.
2. Smaller filesize. I noticed there is audio to the videos but it is
not functional as it is.

I also noticed something strange. I downloaded some of the low res
versions and played them at 200% zoom. The text is legible as soon as
it fades in and stays on the screen, but becomes significantly clearer
just before it fades out. Have more people noticed that?

Great work guys. It's looking real nice. One thing that would be nice
to have is a place in the guest book for AIM, MSN, etc. screen names and
RSU usernames.

I like the tutorial vids. The texts in the videos are helpful but not
as much as being able to see the skill many time over and over again.

That video clip is from the 2001 NUC (National Unicycle Convention) in
Toronto, Canada.

I don't know how high the jump was. It was up to the hood of a car.
The suspension on the car was slightly modified to make the car less
bouncy so it would be easier to jump on the hood. That may have
affected the height of the car.

Well not many people have submitted any freestyle tips and I'm
definately not the best teacher. 🙂 I'm going to have a really good
look through the forums for tips and get them put up on the site (with

Thankyou!! I'm going out to measure the height of my car now 🙂 Dan
Heaton must be able to jump way higher now!!! And Andrew... Keep up the
good work! Great website! It would be good to find someone that knew
