Maybe I'm just unlucky but I've found that the audible alarm function on
my Polar's a) not loud enough and b) breaks easily. Mine just plain
    doesn't work any more.

When this one wears out I'll probably get a Cardiosport. A lot more
bang for your buck with the Cardiosport I've found. Either that or one
of the Timex ones. I've never tried a Timex before but I know some who
have and they really like them.

Polar is the market leader and with that you get a lot more
compatibility with things like cross trainers and the like in gyms. Not
a concern for me; with 300kms a week what use do I have of cardio
    machines in a gym :-)

  2. I'm looking to buy a heart rate monitor - prices seem to vary widely. Does
anyone have any feedback on a reliable unit that will just keep me in a
target zone with audio feedback? I don't really need to download info etc.
just want to know whether I'm in a training zone without having to look at
    the display all the time.

I've seen this G-Pulse HRM on eBay and elswhere.

Polar HRMs seem higher priced generally. I guess my question is whether
units like this one will do the job reliably.

    Thanks
