How to remove decals?

I have usually had good results using a hair dryer to first heat and softren
the decals and then use fingernails to lift and a soft plastic scraper to
fully remove the rest. Eucalyptus oil is great at removing any residual
adhesive (not just from decals - from any adhesive residue on the bike from
the various things you stick on from time to time).

If there is clear coat over the decals, it will come off as well so you may
want to respray that after putting replacement decals on.

I didn't bother with replacements as I think bikes look much nicer without
them but then I'm still into refuting the brand strategists and probably in
splendid isolation on that one.

If you or the kids want new decals a good LBS should be able to steer you in
the direction of brand name replacements - for custom or obscure ones try
googling 'bicycle decals' - I got a longish list when I tried.

If you have some "Goo Gone" around the house, give it a try. I've never
used it to remove bike decals but it works great on removing stickers/decals
from other items.

Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone, MEK, will remove just about anything organic, and it's
available by the gallon at any good Home Depot, etc. I used it to remove
some really nasty and gooey remnants of some kinda sticker on a 70's
Schwinn, and it didn't damage the paint. However, it wouldn't hurt to do a
quick Nu-Finish application before trying to remove the unwanted markings.

If it doesn't remove the decal, it will certainly remove the print on the
decal if it's one of those sticker-types.

Just don't use it on any plastic parts. Had to touch up the gloss coat on
a bike helmet after removing some goo from a sticker with MEK.

Also, don't let anyone sniff it (i.e., follow the directions on the
container).
