this may be a stupid question but what is the best way to get my HR back into the target zone? I usually have a pedal cadence between 80 & 90...should I shift to a larger gear & maintain cadence, or stay in same gear & slow the cadence?

Have a wide HR band (e.g. target HR +/- 5 bpm). When you go under your zone work harder and when you go above your zone ease up. By usining your gears you should be able to maintain a steady cadence even if you are in zone, working harder or working easier.
So change your gear to maintain cadence and ride less intensely.
