  1. How much should the gear needed for a 3 week bike tour weigh? Here's
    one opinion

I would think modern gear would be lighter than this? Any suggestions
other than sleeping under a tarp with no bag?

    Thanks ... Roland

It isn't so much that he doesn't have modern gear, it's that he's
decided to forgo weight savings in exchange for comfort. He comments
that weight could be shaved by going with a smaller tent and sleeping
pad. His tent, for instance, is a 2 person tent that weights 4 pounds 4
ounces. Not a bad weight for a 2 person tent. He apparently likes to
have more room than a solo tent affords.

If you look at his list in the spreadsheet, some of the items may not be
required by other people, but he obviously feels are worth bringing,
such as a bathing suit, two sets of sun glasses, sleeping pants, and
etc. Your needs might be such that you could get by with much less
weight. But then you might find yourself adding some items (and the
weight that goes with them) that he doesn't list.

I loaded a RANS Stratus down with four panniers (two large rear; two
smaller front) for a 5 day trip around the Finger Lakes Region of
Western NY. It was my first and only loaded trip to date. I probably
had no less than 75 lbs of gear! It was TOO MUCH! My advice is get a
quality tent that is the right size for you. Get the right sleeping
bag and the right pad and pillow. Go light on clothing and plan to do
laundry (even in a campground bathroom sink).
