how good is tiagra?

Shimano groupsets in increasing order of quality (and price):

Sora
Tiagra
105 (what happened to the foreign sounding name?)
Ultegra
Dura Ace

Sora sucks for a couple of reasons; 1) it is only 8 speed and 2) the shifters are not standard in terms of the downshift mechanism.

Back to the question "how good is tiagra?". Depends on your cash budget and your riding style. I've logged many a mile on Tiagra/105 components and now ride DA with Ultegra brakes. I never had a complaint. A better frame was the big factor. If you are an occassional rec rider and/or someone on a low budget, Tiagra will suit you fine. Nice thing is you can replace the components with higher end stuff since they are all 9 speed compatible. Bottom line, go out and enjoy your ride. At some point in time you might want to upgrade to a new bike and may consider a model that comes with a better line such as Ultegra. In a nutshell, Tiagra ain't bad for the rec rider.

I have Tiagra (full group) on one of my road bikes, yes it is entry level group, but I have used it for a long time (end of 1999), and so far no problems, right now in the metter shows 32 459 km.

I changed the chain 3 times and the cogs once, I am thinking about changing the BB ( a bit loose) and I service the hubs every year, there I changed one cone and some balls.

I do not ride very hard, also try to shift properly and oil the bike properly except STI that I want to find out how to do it.

My ultegra bike is waiting for this one to give up but I do not se when.
