Is it really necessary for ultra-endurance cyclists to waste their time in Zone 2 when they could be pushing themselves harder in the higher zones, or are they just using it as an excuse to take it easy and still call themselves endurance athletes? I mean, whats the real benefit of spending hours in a zone thats barely above a warm-up pace, and how does it actually translate to improved performance over long distances? Is Zone 2 training just a way for cyclists to feel like theyre doing something productive when theyre actually just going through the motions, or is there actual science behind its effectiveness? And if so, why do so many endurance cyclists seem to be able to get by just fine without it?
