Is it just me or do most bike helmets feel like theyre trying to squish my brain into a pancake the moment I put them on? I mean, Ive tried on helmets from all the big brands and they all seem to have this weird, one-size-fits-all vibe going on. But we all know thats just not true - our heads come in all shapes and sizes, so why do helmet manufacturers insist on ignoring this fact?
Ive seen people riding around with helmets that are clearly too small or too large for their melon, and its like, dont they know that a proper fit is crucial for safety? Its not just about looking cool (although, lets be real, a sweet helmet can make or break a cyclists style). Its about protecting that precious grey matter between our ears.
So, heres my question: are there any helmet manufacturers out there that actually cater to people with, say, unusually shaped heads? You know, the ones with the weird bumps or lopsided craniums? And what about people with afros or dreadlocks - do they just have to suffer through a bad helmet fit or are there specialized helmets out there for them?
And another thing: why do helmet sizing charts always seem to be based on some mythical, perfect head shape? Cant they just, I dont know, use 3D scanning technology or something to create helmets that actually fit real peoples heads? It seems like that would be a no-brainer (heh), but apparently, its just too much to ask from the industry.
So, fellow cyclists, help me out - am I just being paranoid or are helmets really not designed with real peoples heads in mind? And if so, whats the solution? Do we need to start a helmet revolution or something?
