Whats the best way to avoid getting mowed down by a garbage truck while biking in a city where it seems like every street has garbage day and the drivers are oblivious to anyone but themselves? Ive been told to just ride on the sidewalk or wear brighter colors, but isnt that just passing the buck and making cyclists responsible for the actions of reckless drivers? Shouldnt the onus be on the city to educate its sanitation workers on how to safely navigate around bicyclists? And what about all the narrow streets with no bike lanes where its impossible to ride far enough away from the curb to avoid getting sideswiped by a turning truck? Are we just supposed to quit riding altogether in these areas? It seems like a lot of the safety tips being thrown around are just Band-Aid solutions that dont address the root problem of aggressive and inattentive driving. Can anyone offer some actual advice that doesnt involve sacrificing our right to safe roads?
