When buying a helmet on line the sizes are given s,m,l ect.What are the actual diminsions to go with the letters and is the measurement on the circumference of the head.Any help is appreciated,

the only way to be sure (short of trying one on) is to go the the manufacturer's homepage and try to find a sizing chart. there are no standards between manufacturers as regards sizing. the online store may also have a sizing chart somewhere, but if they are sell models from different makers, there's a certain amount of "more or less" involved.
use a tape measure to measure around your head, just above your ears, to the nearest 1/8". just where you'd wear your hat.

I wouldn´t buy clothes with out trying them on , would you do less for somethng as important as a helmet ?
If you buy a helmet via mail order try to go to a shop (where they'll want to charge you double for the same model) and try it on first. It's likely that one manufacturer's helmets will fit your head better than the others. For instance Bell helmets seem to fit me better than Giro or Specialized, etc... Try 'em on first if you can.
