  1. I've never posted here before but it looks like the right group. My wife and
I are currently members of a gym (For the past 7 months). I am 40 and she
    is 46 BTW.

Whilst it's been useful I've started to concentrate more time on running
recently. That doesn't mean I'm any good I just spend more time doing it. I
started using the treadmill in the gym but now prefer doing it outside on
    the road.

All very interesting I hear you say but what's the question. As I've been
doing the running I haven't used the gym, and the only purpose for it now
(For me personally) would be weights which I've neglected from the start. As
I would like to combine weights with the running for a more rounded
programme I either go to the gym or get some for home.

My current preferred option is for home. I have a two car garage with no
cars in it so space should not be an issue. I've had a quick look at the
options, and manufacturers like Weider and Kettler keep cropping up,
although I know many others exist. My simple, uninformed thinking is that
cheap probably means flimsy which is not good for Gym kit. The Kettler stuff
looks OK on paper but I haven't seen it first hand. I live in the UK and
would pay up to £1000 for new or good second hand.

I must stress my aim is not to become a powerlifter, just to exercise and
develop my body beyond the running (Jogging / ambling or whatever my level
    would be described as).

Any suggestions regarding suitable types / makes of equipment would be most
appreciated. I'm also interested in models that allow more than one person
to use it at the same time.

    Thanks

    Geoff

great way to workout. however, you need resistance exercises also. for a
home gym, bowflex (among others) is a good option for a home exercise
program. you can probably get those cheaply from wannabys who have given
    up.

You sound like you know your [censored]. What in particular do you like about the
Bowflex? 'Convenience' of course . . what else?

    Thanks

The problem with a Bowflex is that they aren't really set up for
squatting or deadlifts, both of which are very important exercises.
The Bowflex is better than a sharp stick in the eye, but you can get a
very nice free weights setup for the same price.

  4. Thanks for the various replies. As is typical of me I went out and bought a
system today anyway. I bought a Kettler system off a guy on Ebay. I'd been
looking at the Kettler Ultra setup but this one had so much more and was as
good as brand new. It has 4 stations and allows two people to use it at the
same time. It even has a stepper built in.

I'm not sure what the actual model is as nothing current on the Kettler site
seems to come close to this spec. Anyway I paid £1000 including delivery and
setup. I'm now looking forward to it arriving next week as it looks like a
great piece of equipment. The guy asked us to come and view it and said if
you see it you will want it. He was absolutely right.

I'm now after advice on routines to do on this kind of kit. I'm not trying
to do anything other than build a little strength and generally stay fit.
Any web links or book recommendations would be appreciated. Basically
anything that starts from the beginning.

    Cheers
