  1. I guess logs do work. I unlurked and moaned about being injured a few
weeks ago. Brief replay, was usually running the same 6 miles with 1500
foot vertical Iron Mt here Insane Diego 3/4 times a week about 62-75
minutes. Running through vague knee pain at times.

Figured I was old, had not done any research and did not know of this
place. Just started running, as another 50 year hippie at heart, old
fat man one year and 45 lbs ago.(first Iron Mt 3 miles/800 vert, 65
minutes. Oops jogging, walking I mean, don't want to upset anybody
calling it running, though it IS fun at times to catch near the top
some younger folks in their Asic gels and short shorts, after they had
blasted by on the bottom flats. lol Hmm should I have gone to a Dr.
    first? so they say.

In the last year only slight diet change, still plenty of beer,
smoke, less Ben and Jerry's,more carrots and cereal.. woohoo big
changes. BUt damn, you know I never would have thought I would consider
trail running as damn near fun as a Grateful Dead concert, almost, of
course the mp3 player helps. So fun I catch myself at times thinking
about going outside my house and running on the, the......street.

Anyway, after coming up injured last month I was thinking that I had
came back too fast from when I caught a toe. My log certainly seemed to
have said this, 98 miles in the previous 30 days before breaking down
after the last injury . Now after more reading and perusing my log
some more, I more than overdid it I think. 58 miles in the last 16 days
with 25000+ feet of vertical did me in.

I should have worked some flats into the recovery between the long
runs I think. The 3 runs of 12.5 -13.8 miles to top of El Cap,
supposedly steepest trail in San Diego County now seems a bit ,hmm
overkill ; ) a result of an addiction to the steep I think. Man it was
fun, planning calories and hydration all week, setting a goal.

The first long run being just under 5 hours, not knowing what to expect
or whether I had brought enough hydration, again a great log item. On
the last 2 I tried to get faster each time. The fastest being the
last, 12.5 miles -13, but with 600 or so extra vertical. 3:38 carrying
130 ozs of water, 2000 calories of bars and gels, phone
jacket, knife, lighter. Hmm perhaps some training carrying that 12 lbs
    might have helped as well?

The 4 and then 6 day run uphill the next 3 days after my last El Cap
Summit did me in, walked downhill and knew I was injured. Laid off a
few days, cut back to 39 miles for the next 30, still climbing uphill
though. Read a bunch more, (Googling "runners knee injuries" produced
a plethora or knowledge) learned a bunch more here, between the
entertainment as well. Thanks to all. Spent some money at AMazon in
    the Runners Injury section.

This past week was 14 miles 2250 plus vertical gain and loss. Does one
really have to give up hills to recover? Or can one just go
sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooower, walk more? Not sure I can
give up the steep. But I am learning there is recovery at even 51, and
that PATIENCE is a great word to learn. Can certainly relate now to
grumpiness and lack of ebing able to exercise as desired.

ok,sorry for the rambling, feels semi ok here, lol Anybody else have
friends and family faces glaze over when you talk about vertical gain,
mileage logged, hydration? I have seen a few more seemingly new runners
lately around here, and I just wanted to use as my excuse for this
ramble, to say start keeping that log as soon as possible. I log
temp, whether I took water, (never under 6 miles 85 degrees or less),
rattlesnakes, condition of decrepid body among others.

    peace

As a fellow trail/distance runner, you need to understand that runs
with big elevation gain and loss are quality workouts like speed or a
long run and you can only do these just so many times a week to allow
for recovery. At age 50 I would stick with two quality days per week and
some easier, less hilly at least, days between if not a day or two
completely off. Rest and recovery are not dirty words.

Some people need behavior modification first. 🙂
