Maybe the current price of gasoline was a factor. Maybe my Barnes&Noble would have done it anyway. Whatever ... I don't have to lock my bike to one of the steel benches in front of B&N anymore because last week they put out a shiny new, forest green bike rack. True, it's only 5 ft. long, light gauge steel, and isn't bolted to the cement or attached to anything else, but it *is* a rack. Upon discovering it several days ago, I went straight-away to the manager and thanked him for that welcome service.
At Hollywood Video I hitch to a metal flag pole; at Friendly's I hitch to the back of a bench; at Lowe's Home Improvement I anchor to a display of hurricane fence. Used to hitch to Office Max's bench, but that store closed recently. McDonalds, Ace Hardware, and my bank and supermarket have monster gas meters on their sides that are good hitch points. I can count on one hand the number of businesses in my neck of the woods that offer a bike rack.
