Hippies? There are no more hippies. Ok, that's not true; I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where many of the hippies of yester-year decided to remain, and I suppose they're still around, but they're doing other things: "hippy" is a dated lifestyle term, like "flapper."
We've over-generalized the term beyond recognition if anyone with liberal politics and a taste for certain botanicals qualifies. Being a hippy meant lefty politics and an interest in certain narcotics, yes, but also a very time-specific sense of clothing, hair, "unorthodox" personal hygiene, music, a fetish for flowers, VW buses, casual nudity, unemployment, tent camps, and having sex in the name of ending the Vietnam War.
This is an extremely aging population and an endangered species, frankly (lots of the poor [censored] are bums). "Liberal culture" today isn't possesing of a unified identity. Hippy culture fragmented into a million pieces--us modern lefties have been walking around picking up the chunks, wandering around wondering how they got it so right and so wrong at the same time. We're lots of different things, but for 99% of us, "hippy" isn't one of them.
