  1. Sounds like FLUCK had a Side Hop competition and mislabeled it a High
Jump. High Jump has been around since 1995 (USA). Not sure when the IUF
first had one. We definitely did it in 2000 but I'm not sure about 1998
    or '96.

Only good for Freestyle? You have much to learn, grasshopper. This year
Denmark will host Unicon (IUF). Don't know if you can make it, but it
    will be awesome.

No matter how good my technique is im never going to be able to hit 120

That may be the case, but a taller person *doesn't* have the technique
that Ryan Atkins has, and never will. Not to say that a taller person
might have similar or better talents someday, but they will never, ever
be Ryan's talents. Apples and oranges.

Some sports divide riders by weight, which should also be a factor in
jump height, but I can't think of any that divide by height. Because
it's not really height you want credit for, you want leg length. Any
sports that divide by leg length? Anyway, we don't.

In the past there has also been discussion about whether shorter people
can pedal faster than taller ones, or vice-versa, which crank size is
most efficient for either, etc. But we've only ever divided racing by
wheel size and/or age. Some of the fastest riders ever were not that
tall. Body-wise, you get what you get.

At the moment, Danni is leaving it a little unclear as to whether he
wants to use any criteria. He seemed to discard the IUF rules for High
Jump, and described a little of what was done at FLUCK, but didn't
describe it for entrants into this competition.

High Jump is an actual official event with international rules, but not
everybody likes jumping over a bar. It's definitely more of a hassle to
set up, and it's not a good simulation of what people normally do in
Trials. A Side Hop competition would be better, but then Danni should
specify whether it needs to be to rubber, can you put a hand down, how
long you must stay on the unicycle afterward, etc.

I like the idea of a Side Hop competition and expect it to get
introduced at the IUF level sometime soon. Nobody has proposed it yet
    though...

  15. Then I guess that this is a side hop competition.
To pallets (or any 100cm obstacle), Sidehop to rubber, no hand/s down,
must jump on top of the obstacle and over.

I'm don't know the oficial rules... Where i can see all the rules, for

So... it will be a Side Hope or a High Jump Competition!?...

If it's a High Jump Competition I will need to take my saw, my hammer
and buy some pipes... DIY a High Jump Bar 😄 !

I prefer the side hope... Everbody can do it with some pallets...!

I linked to 'the rules' (http://www.unicycling.org/iuf/rulebook/) in my
earlier post. The 2008 version, coming soon, will have some changes to
the Street event, but there is still no official set of rules for Side
    Hop or Flatland.

If you want an easy rule to use (good for video footage), the rider has
to be on the unicycle for a minimum of 3 seconds before making the
jump, and stay in control on the unicycle (no touching anything) for a
minimum of 3 seconds afterward. This can either be on top of the object
or after jumping back down, as long as it's 3 sec.

The reason we use High Jump and Long Jump events is because they
already exist in Track & Field, so people know what they're all about.

If more that 10 users can jump 1 meter... Wins who is the faster to
post the video!? 😕 In this case we need to change the
competition to: Faster user that jump's 100cm! 🙄

The cool point in competitions is incentivate the riders to increase
    they skills...

It's the only competition that i can participate...because here in
Brazil we don't have any conventions yet! So it's good, with that
competition i have a motivation to go outside, put some pallets in my

Certanly we will have some other Trial competitions...!

  20. Spoonthumb, I was jumping 90+cm when I was 5'6". I'm now ~5'8", and I
think my record has only gone up to maybe 95cm (any idea how high the
concrete thing at the Santa Cruz jetty is?).

I'm interested to see how this goes. I'll be "competing" in the sense
that I'm gonna go out and ride a bunch in the next week or so. I'll try
to post a video if I find a 100cm ledge to (try to) jump up. I'll be
on a 24" muni with a brake as a "handicap".

Make it a hop height competition and stop arguing about the rules
(which can be as simple as 'Get your tire over a 100 cm obstacle
without touching it with anything but your tire, and without knocking
it over, and ride away.'😉 Thus you can use SIF sidehops, rolling hops,
seat in hops, SIF rolling hops, or whatever suits you. If you insist on
jumping over a bar, more power to you (but good luck).
