I've found that WD40 and similar products are only a good idea for loosening old dirt and grease and don't act as a lubricant for long.

Wax-based lubricants have good staying power (e.g. White Lightning Race Day Extreme) so I dollup this on my chain.

When it comes to storing the bike, since all of my bikes are based around steel frames I am a bit worried about condensation forming inside the frames so I always hang my bikes against the wall so that any moisture has an escape via the rear forks (there's a small hole that seems to have been drilled there for just this purpose).
